(BE)ATTITUDES of a Disciple: Matthew 5:3-12
- Blessed - “to be envied, and spiritually prosperous - with life, joy, and satisfaction in God’s favor and salvation regardless of their outward conditions.” (AMP)
- poor in spirit – absence of all self reliance
- mourn – grieving, especially Godly sorrow
- meek – strength under control
- hunger and thirst – pressing desire
- merciful – compassionate, give mercy
- pure in heart – clean in thoughts and feelings
- peacemaker – keep peace or bring reconciliation
ATTRIBUTES of a Disciple: Matthew 5:13-16
- Disciples are created for influence and to CHANGE the environment
- SALT
- preserves
- flavors
- creates thirst
- prevents infections
- Salt that is cast on the ground destroys vegetation
- LIGHT
- Dispels darkness.
- Reveals.
- Shows the way out of darkness and gives hope.
- People will notice
- These good works should draw attention to God.
APPLICATION of the Law: Matthew 5:17-48
Four Key Truths
- Christ came to fulfill the Law
- The whole Law will be fulfilled
- Those who keep and teach the Law are great in God’s kingdom.
- Your righteousness must exceed the Pharisees.
Five Laws Expounded
- Killing
- Adultery
- Swearing
- Retaliation
- Love
Two underlying principles:
- What is in your HEART matters.
- God ENABLES us to keep His Law.
