I really didn't get a chance to finish the foundation of "Pursuing God's Heart" yesterday, so maybe now is a good time. Actually, the one point that I have worked on for several years concerns the revelation of our hearts. In the scripture there are several things according to Scripture that reveals our hearts. The most familiar is the one from the Gospels that says, out of the abundance of our heart our mouth speaks (Luke 6:45). In other words what comes out of our mouth is what is in our hearts. You can tell a lot about a person by what they say, and how they say it. Many times you can hear hurt, frustration, defensiveness, etc. When we listen to our own words, it exposes our heart. Next, in the book of Deuteronomy it says that the Israelites went through the wilderness and it exposed what was in their hearts (Deuteronomy 8:2). When you go through difficult times it reveals what you really trust in. Also stress brings things to the surface that normally wouldn't be evident. It's almost like dross that comes to the surface of our lives. Third, our treasures reveal our hearts. The things we treasure and put above everything else tells what is in our hearts. We can "say" we love something, but it will be proved by how we treasure it (God for example) Matthew 6:21. Fourth, The Word of God removes the mask from our lives (Hebrews 4:12). The Word reveals the thoughts and intents of our hearts. It convicts us of wrong thinking and actions. And finally our giving reveals what is in our hearts. Luke 6:45 says the good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good. Let every man give as he purposes in his heart, 2 Corinthians 9:6 says. Again, our heart is revealed by what and how we give.
I'm getting a little lengthy so I'll quit. . . that all I've got to say about that: )
