DO YOU HAVE AN INHERITANCE?

By Arch Hoercher

Have you or will you receive an inheritance?  Many of us have or will be in the future.  It could be as small as the handmade quilt made by your grandmother or as large as the family business and millions of dollars.  Most of the time one’s inheritance is a good or positive thing, but sometimes it is not.  Sometimes one’s inheritance could be unpaid healthcare bills or the house payment for a home that has not sold.  In most cases this inheritance, whether it is good or bad, becomes yours after the death of the previous owner.  One thing that can be said for whatever one might inherit is that it is only temporary.  Money can be spent, material goods can become damaged and unusable, or one may pass away and leave whatever was inherited to someone else.  Whatever has been inherited is not permanent.  It will pass away.  But, what I would like to write to you about is an inheritance that is permanent.  In fact, it is eternal.

“The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.  Now if we are children, then we are heirs – heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ” Romans 8:16-17 (NIV).  When the rigors and problems of life start pushing you to the ground, remember this.  We are co-heirs with Christ!  We share in His inheritance.  And what do we share?  All of God’s divine resources.  Need a dose of wisdom, God has plenty of that?  Need a little joy?  No need to fret, God has an unending source.  Is God, your father, rich?  Just look at 1 Chronicles 29:11 (NIV) – “Yours, O LORD, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the splendor and the majesty, for everything in heaven and on earth BELONGS to You.”  Not just one or two things, but EVERYTHING belongs to God.  And, if you are a Christian, because you are one of His children will be heirs to His wealth.

“No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no heart has imagined, what God has prepared for those who love Him.” 1 Corinthians 2:9 (NIV).  God is lacking nothing.  His love has no limit or end.  If you need a little hope, He can provide it by the truck load.  And if you are looking for a little wisdom, He is the source and creator of all wisdom.  Are you looking for these things, just ask.  He is your “Abba” (Father) and you are His child.

Don’t believe the message of this gloom and doom world.  You are not worthless.  You are not just a blip on the radar screen of life.  Even when you feel like there is no answer and all hope is lost, remember this.  You are a child of the living God and an heir to His wealth.  Just like the Prodigal son, God will put a ring on your finger showing that you have the authority of the Father, and sandals on your feet to show that you are in the family, and will cover you with the very best robe to show that your sins have been covered by the blood of His Son Jesus Christ.  Romans 8:15-17 in the Message Bible reads, “This resurrection life you received from God is not a timid, grave-tending life.  It is adventurously expectant, greeting God with a childlike ‘What’s next, Papa?’  God’s Spirit touches our spirits and confirms who we really are.  We know who He is, and we know who we are: Father and children.  And we know we are going to get what’s coming to us – an unbelievable inheritance!”

Won’t a father give His children good gifts?  If you are a worrywart, who has an unending supply of peace?  If you do not know which way to turn or in what direction to go, talk to your Father – the ultimate guidance counselor.  When you approach His throne, remember who you are.  You are one of His children.  In you the Spirit of God dwells.

Earlier I mentioned that to gain an inheritance someone probably had to die.  This inheritance is no different.  Someone did have to die for you to receive it.  That someone was Jesus Christ.  He had to die on the cross so that you could become co-heirs with Him.  When He took His last breath on that cross you gained a share in His inheritance.  Don’t ever believe that what you have is lacking.  Jesus Christ is lacking nothing.  You also will be lacking nothing.

Sometimes when we are facing our giants, our faith and trust in God might not be at its strongest.  Try to always remember who you are.  You are a child of the all-powerful and all-knowing living God.  Don’t sell yourself short.  His Spirit lives within you.  Claim your inheritance.
