Exhortations to Honor and Protect the Sacred

  • Priests were commissioned to guard the sacred things of God; and to guide others in their honor.
  • Jesus also directed that the sacred and holy things were honored and not thrown to the dogs.

Sacred vs. Profane

Hebrews 12:16 Lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright.
  • To profane something is to take the sacred and reduce it to common status.
  • Sacred is set aside or reserved for God.
Tendencies of Mankind: Romans 1: 18-25
18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;
21 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.

Romans 12

1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.
2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

Romans

Chapters 1-3 – All have sinned but God gave His Son to save the world
Chapter 4-5 – Show God’s blessings that He brings to our lives.
Chapter 6-7 – Reveals the Holy Spirit work to liberate us from sin.
Chapter 8 – Reminds us that there is no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus.
Chapter 9-11 – Tells us that we have been chose by God.

Sacrifice is an Old Testament concept

  • Sacrifices were brought from the flocks and herds.
  • Sacrifices were SYMBOLIC of Jesus, the Lamb of God.
  • There were specific instructions given concerning sacrifices.
  1. Bringing your best defines your VALUES
    2. PICKING YOUR BEST MEANS THAT YOU UNDERSTAND THE COST.
  2. Giving your best requires PREPARATION
    3. WORSHIP IS INTENTIONAL NOT ACCIDENTAL.
  3. Giving your best reveals your HEART
    4. IN MAKING DECISIONS CONCERNING YOUR WORSHIP YOUR HEART WILL BE REVEALED.
  4. Giving your best is ACCEPTABLE TO GOD
    5. GOD GAVE HIS BEST, DOESN’T HE DESERVE YOUR BEST?
  5. Giving your best highlights your personal PARTICIPATION in worship
    6. GOD WANTS YOU . . . A LIVING SACRIFICE.

HOPE AGAIN

1 Peter 3:15
But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:

When hope dies

Psalms 43:5
Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.
  • Hopelessness sets in.
  • There are things that destroy hope:
    • -Overwhelming circumstances
    -Disappointed expectations
    -Deafening negativism

How can we have hope?

Romans 5:2
. . . and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. . . 5 And hope maketh not ashamed
  • Prophetic Promises
    • Romans 4:18 Who against hope believed in hope, that he might become the father of many nations, according to that which was spoken . . .
  • Past Performance
    • Psalms 37:25 I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread.
  • Proven Love
    • John 15:13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

Hope brings . . .

Jeremiah 17:7 Blessed is the man that trusteth in the LORD, and whose hope the LORD is.
  • A Positive Outlook
    • -“I know my redeemer lives . . .”
  • Preparation for the Future
    • -“I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down. . . “
  • Expectant Prayer
    • -2 Chronicles 7:14 If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray . . . will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

Undeniable hope

Lamentations 3:21 Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope: 22 It is of the LORD'S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. 23 They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness. A Godly Foundation
