Matthew 22:34-40
“What’s love got to do with it?” Tina Turner coined this phrase in her hit song that reached the top of the charts in September of 1984. So what is love, and what does it have to do with anything? The answer; EVERYTHING!
For years I thought that the bible was just a rule book that God gave us so that we will do what he wants. From talking to different people over the years, this is a pretty popular belief. But what is the bible really? Is it really just a rule book that some narcissistic god up in the sky imposes on us so that we will do whatever he says? If you take a closer look, you will probably find this to be untrue.
Ok, by now you’re probably saying “Enough already, what is it?” Believe me when I tell you, the bible is the greatest love story ever written. When God gave the Ten Commandments , his purpose was love, not tyranny. Jesus revealed this by saying “You must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. A second is equally important: Love your neighbor as yourself. The entire law and all the demands of the prophets are based on these two commandments.” Notice he says “The entire law.” God’s law is about love. Love has everything to do with it. If you read the ten commandments, you will notice the first four are about loving God and the last six are about loving our neighbors. It’s all about love. Following Jesus is all about loving him, and loving others. Everything else is temporary, but love is eternal. So let’s start loving. Love God and love other people. Even the ones who refuse to love you.
